Natalie and Richard Brown – New House Farm Wedding June 2016

Natalie and Richard Brown were married in a beautiful ceremony at New House Farm in June last year. They’ve kindly written a blog about how they planned their big day, including details of their suppliers, and shared their beautiful photographs. Enjoy!

Planning

After getting engaged we discussed possible locations for our wedding – we had a few options as since meeting at university in Newcastle, we have lived in Hull and in Birmingham, but for me as a proud Cumbrian, these places didn’t really feel like ‘home’ and they couldn’t offer the amazing scenery of the Lakes. As I’m originally from West Cumbria, I wanted to find a venue in this part of the county and we were also keen for our guests, many of whom would be travelling from out of the area, to visit a part of the Lake District they may not have been to before. Luckily, we found New House Farm in Lorton, which fitted the bill perfectly.

Venue

We first visited New House Farm and met Hazel in September 2014 and knew that it had to be our venue. The location was fantastic – rural but still close enough to the amenities of the surrounding towns of Cockermouth and Keswick, where most of our guests stayed. With breathtaking views of the surrounding fells, The Hayloft provided a fabulous space for our wedding and we loved the idea of decorating it to suit our taste.

A huge advantage of New House Farm was being able to choose our own timings of the day and, as we decided to hold the ceremony there too, having the entire wedding in one venue ensured that the day was relaxed and suited to our pace. The ceremony was easy to organise through contacting the Registrar in Cockermouth. As we were living in Birmingham throughout planning the wedding, we were able to take our documents to our local registry office rather than travelling up to Cumbria.

In our experience, planning the wedding was an enjoyable and straight-forward process, even when not based near the venue. Thanks to Hazel’s quick, detailed and helpful emails, the distance was not a problem. The same can be said of our suppliers, all of whom we would highly recommend. When choosing our suppliers for the big day, Hazel’s list of contacts was invaluable. Every supplier that we used was recommended by her and had worked at New House Farm before and so knew the venue well.

Suppliers

At first it did seem a little overwhelming to select and book all the suppliers as well as decorating the venue. However, it did mean that the day was completely unique and included lots of personal touches. For example, my mum and I spent months before making bunting to decorate the inside of the barn, choosing material to match our colour scheme from Birmingham’s famous Rag Market. We had friends and family collecting jam jars of various shapes and sizes for our flowers, which were provided by Floral Boutique in Cockermouth.  To acquire log slices for the table centre pieces, we even had an interesting trip out to a sawmill in Penrith. We didn’t forget the outdoors either – using old swimming caps from events my sister and I have competed in to decorate around the outdoor jacuzzi area! Hazel put us in touch with Dale Tallentire who provided the seating, lights and sound equipment. A few days before the wedding, we had access to The Hayloft and called upon the help of family and friends to get it decorated in time for the big day. Holding our wedding at New House Farm provided us with some wonderful memories that we wouldn’t have got from one of the ‘package’ style weddings that are available.

Accommodation

The bridal party stayed in the bed and breakfast the night before (I can highly recommend bubbles in the hot tub to ease those pre-wedding jitters!). The rooms are all beautiful and it provided an excellent space to get ready for the wedding. It was fantastic to be able to spend a relaxing morning having breakfast and getting our hair and make-up done by Anna Sorbie of Kendal, who travelled to New House Farm, rather than darting about between appointments. Before getting ready, we even had time to go for a quick run along the lanes around Lorton and soak up the views!

On the day

Hazel was on hand the whole time to direct the caterers, florist and photographer who arrived throughout the morning. We were blessed with the most glorious sunshine which showed off our surroundings to their absolute best. Thanks to Jason Chambers Photography of Keswick, who captured the mood of the day and scenery to perfection, we have an amazing set of photographs which show what an excellent location New House Farm provides. After the wedding breakfast, Jason took us to some locations nearby to New House Farm and took some stunning shots. This was also a lovely opportunity to spend some time together taking in the events of the day.

Now, just over a year later, we can truly say that our wedding was the best day of our life; we have so many wonderful memories. Along with our guests, who were in awe of our venue, we enjoyed the catering and service provided by Karen Rhodes of Grange. We used the outdoor space for garden games such as croquet, giant jenga and welly wanging – which was a huge hit with the guests! In the evening, we were entertained by the Mayfields who travelled up from Manchester and kept the dance floor packed all night, even bringing in the guests from enjoying the spectacular sunset.

I just smile every time I think about our wedding day and we could not have chosen a more perfect venue to celebrate the beginning of our married life. I just wish we could do it all again!
