Deciding that you want to propose to your partner is a life-changing decision, and you want to make sure it’s a moment you can both treasure for years to come. Valentine’s Day makes for a popular day to get engaged, and it’s easy to see why. It’s one of the most romantic days of the year, which makes setting the mood that much easier, and while some may find it a cliche (you’ll know your partner well enough to know their take), the inbuilt romance just gives everything an extra sweetness. Of course, you might worry that you risk losing the surprise factor, but this doesn’t have to be the case. With romance in the air, taking your beloved out for a special meal or a charming minibreak won’t raise any eyebrows, meaning that there’s a greater chance they’ll be taken by surprise by your proposal.
Just make sure that it’s personal, and memorable. This obviously this goes for any proposal, but on such a popular day you want to create a moment that is unique to the two of you. If you’re going out for dinner, wait for an intimate moment to pop the question – every restaurant for miles around will be extremely busy on Valentine’s Day, so save the question for after, or even before, your meal. This has the added benefit of throwing your partner off the scent!
As for the ring, there are a couple of options. Old rules like spending two months’ salary on the ring or not having any input from the person who will be wearing it have given way to couples doing what feels right for them. These days, 25% of proposals take place without a ring, with couples opting to shop for it together once they’re engaged. While diamonds are still the most popular stone for engagement rings, alternatives, such as morganite and sapphires are also gaining popularity. The key is finding a ring that is as unique and beautiful as your love story – that way your partner will be proud to wear it for years to come.
